Common Sense for Uncommon Times - Fair and Balanced

Random, occasionally rambling thoughts with links to interesting, scandalous, or partisan news of the day.

Fair and Balanced
common sense indeed. Living Heroes
We owe the liberty and freedom we take for granted to the enlisted men and women in the armed forces. They sacrifice family, ease, and even life laboring in service to all of us. The least we can do for them is honor their devotion with dignified pay scales, decent education for themselves and their children, and reasonable compensation for service away from their families and death on the battlefield. Flag waving politicians who praise the troops on one hand and cut their pay and benefits with the other should be deeply ashamed of themselves.

Strengthening Social Security It's not April 1 yet, but this site comes too perilously close to the truth to call it a joke.

Where have the grownup Republicans gone? : "Willingly or not, congressional Republicans are identifying themselves as a party ready to accept systematic American violations of human rights."

What saddens me as a fan of old style horse trading and friendly partisanship is the nearly complete demise of honorable Republicans in higher office. That sounds harsh, and it is, deliberately. I would not have imagined 25 years ago that the party of Ronald Reagan would encompass so many liars, so many crooks, so much ethically slipshod behavior, and now, even the condoning of the worst blotches ever inflicted on US honor.

I would not have imagined that the party of Goldwater and Danforth and McCain could put party above country in episode after episode of incompetence and blame shedding that has cost untold lives and treasure. I would not have imagined that a party leader like Tom Delay, less than seven years after the impeachment of a President, could run roughshod over every American principle of fair play, integrity, and propriety in public matters, and be protected from censure by a Congressional leadership that obviously has forgotten the concept of shame.

There are far too many decent and honest Republicans in the nation to let this cesspool remain uncleansed forever, but the cards are stacked against change since incumbent reelection is nearly a certainty. I can only hope that viable, honest challengers are found to replace the worst of the bunch in Washington or that well-earned jail sentences knock them out of government. I hope the citizens of Sugarland, Texas find it in their souls to give up their powerful champion in Washinton before he drags their good name any deeper into the mud. I would hope that Delay is the exception to the honorable nature of Republicans in Texas and America at large, but until I see him answering the repeated, voluminous criminal and ethical charges against him, he stands for all Republicans. If "values" Republicans want to be forever known as liars and crooks, available to the highest bidder, so be it.
