Common Sense for Uncommon Times - Fair and Balanced

Random, occasionally rambling thoughts with links to interesting, scandalous, or partisan news of the day.

Fair and Balanced
common sense indeed. Living Heroes
We owe the liberty and freedom we take for granted to the enlisted men and women in the armed forces. They sacrifice family, ease, and even life laboring in service to all of us. The least we can do for them is honor their devotion with dignified pay scales, decent education for themselves and their children, and reasonable compensation for service away from their families and death on the battlefield. Flag waving politicians who praise the troops on one hand and cut their pay and benefits with the other should be deeply ashamed of themselves.

Ted Koppel, are you paying attention? No Joke: Daily Show Viewers Follow Presidential Race When Ted Koppel was asking Jon Steward whether he thought viewers of his comedy show were actually getting news, Steward wasn't armed with the results of this Annenberg study. Too bad. His viewers seem to know more than Koppel's.

Finally, the Washington Post gets it about right:
"...Mr. Bush deserves to be judged by this record. In our view, it is one of courage in setting goals and steadfastness in sticking to them but also one of extraordinary recklessness and incompetence in execution..."
My preference is to vote for competence above almost all else, but I'll give Bush the benefit of the doubt on the courage and steadfastness riff. I won't give him any credit for the sloppy intelligence, ignoring of inspectors, and the hints of Oedipal jealousy that seemed to drive his lust for attacking Iraq.

The Sounds of Silence:
From a story about the CBS documents:: "White House spokesman Scott McClellan responded by saying, 'It is always best for journalists to stick to reporting the facts..."

If Scott really believes that, his boss is going to be awfully pissed when nothing is written about what Bush or Cheney say...ever again.

Paging George Orwell: We kill twelve and wound 61 and what does the US spokesman say? "'The helicopter fired on the Bradley to destroy it after it had been hit earlier and it was on fire,' said Major Phil Smith of the 1st Cavalry Division. 'It was for the safety of the people around it.'"
When reality moves past farce, what's left to discuss. This administration is entirely insane...

Hoist on his own petard?<a href="http://nytimes.com/2004/09/08/politics/campaign/08bush.html">The Cheney Warns of Terror Risk if "wrong choice" Wins: "Vice President Dick Cheney warned on Tuesday that the country would be at risk of a terror attack if it made 'the wrong choice' in November"
With the steady emphasis by Kerry on "W is wrong", it's clear that Dick Cheney now agrees with Kerry's premise. If Bush is re-elected the country will be at greater risk of a terror attack. For perhaps the first time, I am in harmony with Cheney.

The Onion got it right. There must be something about being a comedic presence that makes your forecasts and news coverage ever so much more accurate than actual journalists are able to manage Bush: 'Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Prosperity Is Finally Over'

Maybe I'm missing something.<
a href="http://nytimes.com/2004/09/07/politics/campaign/07CND-KERR.html?hp">The Bush goes all medical on us: "For 20 years he's been one of the trial lawyers' most reliable allies in the Senate,' Mr. Bush said about Mr. Kerry. 'I don't think you can be pro-doctor, pro-hospital, pro-patient and pro-trial lawyer at the same time. I think you have to choose. My opponent made his choice, and he put him on the ticket.
'I made my choice; I'm standing with the docs and patients all across America,' he said."

Ahem...hey...pssst. Mr. President....it's the docs and patients who sue each other. You can't be for both in this debate. Edwards chose patients. It's clear you chose insurance and pharmaceutical companies. The docs and hospitals are out in the cold with nobody to speak for them.

Speaking of medicine, what' s this obgyn love thing the prez has going on. Maybe it's some game he and Laura play.

More Re-thug-lican antics The discourse is spiraling downward at an alarming rate. By election day I wouldn't be surprised to see the new 527 "Asshole Jerks for Bush" in high gear.
