Common Sense for Uncommon Times - Fair and Balanced

Random, occasionally rambling thoughts with links to interesting, scandalous, or partisan news of the day.

Fair and Balanced
common sense indeed. Living Heroes
We owe the liberty and freedom we take for granted to the enlisted men and women in the armed forces. They sacrifice family, ease, and even life laboring in service to all of us. The least we can do for them is honor their devotion with dignified pay scales, decent education for themselves and their children, and reasonable compensation for service away from their families and death on the battlefield. Flag waving politicians who praise the troops on one hand and cut their pay and benefits with the other should be deeply ashamed of themselves.

George Will, writing in 1992 about another George Bush presidential campaign, manages to capture in one essay the essence of the Bush modus operandi. Read it and weep that our press is so cowed and complacent that this story of a campaign run bully style isn't the number one issue in the news every day. The lying. The distortions. The smears. It's all a game plan that Karl Rove inherited from Lee Atwater. Until the press reports on it, the scumbags that use it are going to keep stealing elections they could never win honorably. Until the press reports on it, they will never get the respect the fourth estate should naturally aspire to.

The saddest thing about the smear is the revelation that many Republicans are willing to lie and ruin their own character in support of the worst president America has ever had.

Revolt of the Press Corps:: a 60-year-old man in Niceville, Fla. said Tuesday, This is the very first time that I have felt that God was in the White House. Bush responded "Thank you. Thank you all."
Perhaps a little more humility might be in order...

Goon Watch
I'll be occasionally tracking the frequent, ugly uses of goon tactics by the Republicans during the election season. The use of air horns and bullhorns described here is typical:JS Online: 'Everything is at stake,' Kerry tells riverfront crowd
