Common Sense for Uncommon Times - Fair and Balanced

Random, occasionally rambling thoughts with links to interesting, scandalous, or partisan news of the day.

Fair and Balanced
common sense indeed. Living Heroes
We owe the liberty and freedom we take for granted to the enlisted men and women in the armed forces. They sacrifice family, ease, and even life laboring in service to all of us. The least we can do for them is honor their devotion with dignified pay scales, decent education for themselves and their children, and reasonable compensation for service away from their families and death on the battlefield. Flag waving politicians who praise the troops on one hand and cut their pay and benefits with the other should be deeply ashamed of themselves.

Cato and the Sierra Club Sure they're unlikely bedfellows but Carl Pope from the Sierra Club and Ed Crane from the Cato Instutute have joined forces to sink the lousy House and Senate Energy Bills. It's too late, they argue, to craft anything sensible, so kill the bills, kill the subsidies and the distortions they create in the market place.

Bush Beats Hoover It's hard to imagine a more pathetic comparison than George Bush and Herbert Hoover, but for those few deluded partisans who think Bush has a handle on things, here's the real story.

Move over, MoveOn. There was a mini-furor a few weeks back when some bloggers took MoveOn.org to task for arranging a letter writing campaign against an invasion of Iraq. Most thought it unseemly for the public to write letters to the editor they hadn't composed themselves. How embarassing, then, for three Georgia lawmakers who have sent nearly identical letters to the EPA on behalf of a major campaign contributor. You'd think that for 5 or 10 grand you could at least put some original thinking into your boot licking exercise

Slate hugs Bush. I'm not a fan of Katharine (Kill Gore) Seelye, but Slate jumps into bed with W in this wild screed against a fair report about Bush siding with big business and polluters. Jack (Kiss me George) Shafer falls all over himself trying to find an edge to excuse W's opposition to taxing polluters. Shafer, by the way, goes out of his way to explain that the industrial companies being assessed the tax aren't polluters. Damn, I thought it was bad enough to have one entire political party in bed with the devil, but I never thought I'd find Slate doing a menage a trois with them. I guess I just lack imagination. If Shafer was interested in chasing down a lousy story how about Broder's sloppy reporting on Senators becoming President.

Gore said it first. In May of 1998 in front of the Economic Club of Detroit Gore mentioned an economic reversal, a national emergency, or a foreign crisis as the only bars to balancing the budget. So, Bush does remember someone saying this. It just wasn't him.
